Electronic fence case at a primary school in Diqing, Yunnan.
Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan is located on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with an average altitude of over 3,000 meters, cold climate and complex terrain. Many local schools are built against the mountains, and campus perimeters often adjoin forests, slopes or rural roads. Traditional walls are not only costly to build but also prone to cracks from geological settlement. To improve campus security, a middle school in Diqing recently introduced a pulse electronic fence system as the first line of perimeter defense, effectively compensating for the shortcomings of manual patrols and ordinary surveillance.
The school's electronic fence project mainly surrounds the campus's external walls and some open boundaries. Based on the on-site terrain, the project adopted a 4-wire pulse electronic fence with post spacing of 4 meters, avoiding steep slopes and routing reasonably around drainage ditches and trees. The front-end uses alloy wires with both high-voltage pulse and low-voltage detection modes, which both trigger alarms when touched or climbed and do not harm the human body. Meanwhile, the electronic fence is linked with the school's existing video surveillance system: when an alarm occurs, the surveillance platform immediately pops up the corresponding zone's picture, allowing security personnel to confirm the situation in the shortest time.
In design, the project fully considered Diqing's plateau environment. Because of large day-night temperature differences, strong ultraviolet radiation and frequent winter snowfall, the equipment selection used low-temperature-resistant, corrosion-proof outdoor control energizers, with sealed, waterproof wiring terminals. In addition, the pulse voltage was appropriately adjusted for the local climate to avoid false alarms in thin air or high humidity. The school also arranged special security personnel to receive equipment operation training, mastering arming, disarming, alarm reset and routine inspection skills to ensure long-term stable operation of the system.
After several months of operation, the electronic fence's effect gradually emerged. The previously recurring incidents of outsiders climbing the walls and stray animals entering dropped significantly, and security staff no longer needed to patrol along the walls frequently. On one late night, a branch blown down by strong wind pressed on the fence line and triggered an alarm; security quickly ruled it out through surveillance without panic. More importantly, the electronic fence had a strong deterrent effect, and students and parents generally reported a significantly enhanced sense of campus safety. The school principal said the system not only reduced the intensity of manual inspection but also gave everyone a new understanding of technical prevention facilities.
Overall, the electronic fence's implementation at this school in Diqing was not a simple equipment installation but a targeted security upgrade combining the geography, climate and campus management needs of the plateau region. It proves that even in remote mountainous areas, intelligent perimeter protection can operate reliably. This case also provides a useful reference for primary and secondary schools in other high-altitude areas: with limited funds, prioritizing a pulse electronic fence to build the perimeter defense line, then gradually integrating surveillance, alarm and access control systems, is a pragmatic path to improve campus security.
